A shoreline
with a story.
Since the late 19th century, Oak Bluffs has been a cherished summer gathering place for Black families.
The Inkwell—part of Oak Bluffs Town Beach—became a generational sanctuary when exclusion shaped where Black travelers could safely rest and recreate. Today, it remains a center of friendship, community, early-morning swims, and proud island tradition. Its name carries a contested past and has been reclaimed with pride.
That legacy reaches well beyond the sand: through historic homes, churches, civic life, art, literature, and the many families who return year after year. The African American Heritage Trail offers the richest way to explore these stories with care.
